BOONE—Five students from the Industrial Design/Furniture Design Program at Appalachian State University are exhibiting their work at the Milan Furniture Fair through April 13.
Appalachian is one of 17 schools from around the world and only one of two from the United States that were selected to participate in the furniture fair.
The students’ work was directed by Kern Maass and Richard Prisco, both faculty in the Department of Technology and Environmental Design in Appalachian’s College of Fine and Applied Arts. Some of the work being exhibited was created for the Solar Decathlon Europe Competition and will continue on to France after the Milan exhibition closes.
The Milan Furniture Fair has been held annually since 1961. It is the largest trade fair of its kind in the world with 325,000 attendees last year and more than 5,700 journalists.
The students’ work will be exhibited in the fair’s SaloneSatellite, which was created in 1998 to bring together the most promising young designers from around the world with the most important business people and talent scouts gathered in Milan. Many of the pieces presented as prototypes in previous exhibitions have gone into production.
