Industrial Design Students place in the 2014 Retail and Health Innovation Challenge

For the second year in a row, Appalachian State Industrial Design Majors place in the Retail and Health Innovation Challenge hosted by Wake Forest University School of Business and sponsored by CVS Health. As the name suggests, the event is a business plan competition for students to present ideas that will energize retail and contribute to the health and well-being of consumers. Three teams from Appalachian competed amongst the sixteen semi-finalists with students from Duke University, UC Berkeley, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, University of Southern California and others. The Appalachian teams were: winners

Myo-bility (Second Place and $10,000)
Team Members: Sean-Michael Smith and Zach Starin
Presented a kinetic knee brace that assists patients recovering from knee injury and reduces recovery time.

Foldable Foodware (Third Place and $5,000)
Team Members: Austin Waggoner and Sam Utesch
Presented a sustainable, compostable alternative to styrofoam for the take-out and take-home food industry.

Esaress Dishware (Semi-finalist)
Team Members: Sheilla Sanon and Kaitlin Willard
Presented a dishware concept designed to address the needs of a person recovering from an eating disorder.

All 3 Appalachian concepts were conceived by Industrial Design students in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The partnership with ID and the Center for Entrepreneurship has been very productive and is a testament to the power of inter-disciplinary collaboration. My hat is off to the creativity and talent of our Industrial Design department.
